However, by the end of the nineteenth century waterborne disease had become recognized as a serious problem in industrialized river valleys. ![]() By 1860, there were 136 water systems in the United States, and most of these systems supplied water from springs low in turbidity and relatively free from pollution (Baker, 1948). Many water supplies in the United States were subsequently constructed in cities primarily for the suppression of fires, but most have been adapted to serve commercial and residential properties with water. ![]() The Boston system emulated ancient Roman water supply systems in that it was multipurpose in nature. The first municipal water utility in the United States was established in Boston in 1652 to provide domestic water and fire protection (Hanke, 1972).
